The special unit “Grom”, previously under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, began to become part of the Russian Guard, TASS reported, citing law enforcement agencies. According to the agency, this process will last several months.
Companion TASS said that all relevant documentation and infrastructure transfer are now being prepared as part of the transition procedure. No other details are provided.
July 17, State Duma deputy Alexander Khinshtein reportedthat the special unit “Grom” will be transferred from the Ministry of Internal Affairs to the Russian Guard. He noted that when integrated into the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the number of “Grom” did not exceed 2.7 thousand people, and now it is 7 thousand, which exceeds the total number of SOBR fighters (approximately 5 thousand). According to Mr. Khinshtein, “Grom” will become part of the Russian Guard along with the entire infrastructure.
The special unit “Grom” was created in 2003 to carry out law enforcement operations of the State Drug Control Service (later FSKN). Since December 6, 2016, “Grom” has been operating as part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, its area of responsibility has been expanded across the entire spectrum of police functionality.
