The Sverdlovsk Region has requested federal assistance to fight the fires, Governor Yevgeny Kuyvashev said. He assessed the situation as critical: the area of fires is 20 thousand hectares. Fire earlier destroyed There are two gunpowder depots in the region.
“Before the holidays, we asked the residents not to go to the forest, not to kindle fires, to relax in a different way. Only the first day of the May holidays has passed, and the whole region is already on fire. 20 thousand hectares! There is a critical situation in the region!” Mr. Kuyvashev said (his words are quoted by the regional government in Telegram channel). The governor threatened violators with fines of up to 2 million rubles.
The situation with fires is exacerbated by the weather, the head of the region explained. “Winter with little snow, peat bogs were smoldering, then an abnormally hot, dry spring, strong wind, tomorrow again gusts up to 20 m/s! <...> We requested federal assistance,” the head of the region added.
Yevgeny Kuyvashev said that planes of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, helicopters of the Ministry of Defense, the Russian Guard and Avialesokhrana would operate in the region. The region is assisted by other entities – the Arkhangelsk Region and the Krasnoyarsk Territory. The head of the region also called on residents to help and become volunteers. “We need more people. First of all – adult men, with cars, in work clothes and hard-soled shoes, in order to organize the supply of water and equipment, ”the governor explained.
The day before, May 7, a fire happened in the village of Pervomaisky. He destroyed two powder magazines on an area of 960 sq. m. Firefighters managed to prevent the spread of fire to the other three warehouse buildings. The authorities are evacuating the village.
