In 2023, Sevmash will hand over two newest nuclear submarines to the Russian Navy — the strategic Alexander III (project 955, Borey-A) and the multi-purpose Krasnoyarsk (project 885, Yasen-M). Alexey Rakhmanov, General Director of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), spoke about this in an interview with RIA Novosti.
Project 955 submarines belong to the fourth generation of nuclear submarine missile carriers. They are armed with 16 Bulava ballistic missiles and are designed to solve the problems of strategic nuclear deterrence. The Navy now has six such submarines: Yuri Dolgoruky, Alexander Nevsky, Vladimir Monomakh, Prince Vladimir, Prince Oleg and Generalissimo Suvorov.
Project 885M nuclear submarines are a modernized version of Project 885. They are armed with Caliber and Onyx cruise missiles. The Navy now has one Project 885 and two Project 885M boats.
Last week President Vladimir Putin informedthat Russia in 2023 will continue to pay increased attention to the nuclear triad. According to him, in particular, mass deliveries of Zircon sea-based hypersonic missiles are expected. Also in the coming years, three more nuclear-powered submarine cruisers are to enter the navy.
