Institute of Economic Policy named after. E.T. Gaidar (IEP) will stop conducting and publishing monthly business surveys conducted by the Market Research Laboratory. The laboratory that was part of the institute was liquidated, said its head Sergei Tsukhlo.
He notified survey users of this in an email. According to him, the entire laboratory staff was fired. “From February 1, 2024, I am no longer an employee of the IEP,” wrote Mr. Tsukhlo (quoted from RBC).
The last survey by the laboratory was submitted on February 1 (Marketing Survey Bulletin No. 380). Sergei Tsukhlo clarified that he plans to conduct the 381st survey under the brand of another organization; he did not give its name. “An agreement in principle has been reached on this, and the questionnaire for the February 2024 survey is ready,” he said.
The IEP press service confirmed the information about the liquidation of the laboratory. The institute did not give reasons for this, stating that “this is an internal matter” and “not subject to discussion.”
The laboratory has been conducting surveys since 1992, and more than 1 thousand industrial enterprises took part in them. Based on the results, the dynamics of the optimism index and the industrial forecast index were formed. The methodology of market surveys was invented in Germany in the middle of the 20th century. Their peculiarity is that they measure changes in the main indicators of industrial enterprises based on the responses of their managers directly, without relying on government statistics. Until February 2022, survey results were entered into the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) database, which included the results of similar studies from 46 countries.
