The future has come: what is phygital sport and how it develops in the Novgorod region

In March 2024, Kazan will host the international competitions in digital sports “Games of the Future”. Members of the esports club of Novgorod State University announced their participation in the tournament. Figit-sport combines traditional sports and e-sports. Its name comes from the words physical (physical) and digital (digital). For example, figurative football tournaments are held in two stages: first, teams play on a console in FIFA, and then move to the field. Competitions in the computer environment are provided by virtual and augmented reality devices: helmets with screens, controllers, tactile gloves and others.
In Russia, phygital sports received official status. At the end of January 2023, the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation entered it into the All-Russian Register of Sports. The corresponding order is published on the official website of legal information.
Kazan became a pioneer in the new sports direction. In September last year, the first Fidgital Games were held in the capital of Tatarstan. Participants competed in four disciplines: football, basketball, Beat Saber (a musical computer game in virtual reality) and drone racing.
In the Novgorod region, phygital sports have just begun to gain momentum. Until the end of June, the first tournament will be held at NovSU, the participants of which will meet in the real and computer worlds. The esports club, founded in 2020, is responsible for the development of this area at the university. It is a student association that holds tournaments in virtual disciplines in Veliky Novgorod. Next year, Novgorod e-sportsmen will represent the region at the large-scale international competition “Games of the Future” in Kazan. The tournament will bring together about two thousand participants and last nine days. The organizers expect that the live broadcast of the competition will collect three billion views.
