The founder of the public “Police Ombudsman” Vorontsov was released from prison

The founder of the public “Police Ombudsman” Vladimir Vorontsov, convicted in August 2022 on charges of distributing pornographic materials and extortion, has been released. He served his sentence in one of the colonies in the Kirov region. A number of restrictions were imposed on him after leaving the colony: in particular, the social activist cannot leave the Moscow region for the next two years.

Information about Vorontsov’s release from the colony was published on the website of the Kirovo-Chepetsky District Court of the Kirov Region, which established administrative supervision measures against him.

“The period of detention of V.A. Vorontsov is counted towards the term of serving the sentence. in custody from 05/07/2020 until the sentence comes into force at the rate of one day per day and a half. The beginning of the term is 06/08/2023, the end of the term is 10/21/2023, that is, Vorontsov V.A. is released from prison, having an outstanding conviction for a serious crime,” says the text court decision.

In addition to the ban on leaving the Moscow region, over the next two years, Vorontsov will need to “appear twice a month at the internal affairs agency at the place of residence, stay or actual location for registration.”

Administrative supervision measures were established due to the fact that in the colony Vorontsov was recognized as a malicious violator of the order of serving his sentence. The FSIN also demanded that he be prohibited from leaving the house from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., but the court refused.

In August 2022, the Lublinsky Court of Moscow sentenced Vorontsov to five years in prison on a criminal case of extortion and distribution of pornography. He is also deprived of the right to engage in activities related to website administration for a period of ten years. He was also stripped of the rank of police major. Vorontsov has been in custody since May 2020.

Vorontsov served in the police for 13 years and retired in 2017 shortly after the launch of the “Police Ombudsman” community on the VKontakte social network; he later started a Telegram channel of the same name. The “Police Ombudsman” project, which Vorontsov created, is dedicated to protecting the rights of police officers. He spoke informally about the problems faced by law enforcement officers in Russia. The public also collected complaints from security forces about illegal actions of the leadership.
