The first Olympic biathlon champion Swede Klas Lestander died at the age of 91 on January 13. He died at night at home in Arjeplog, in northern Sweden, reported January 13 Swedish media.
Lestander made history during the 1960 Olympic Games in Squaw Valley in the USA, when biathlon first appeared on the program of the Games. He won the competition and became the first Olympic champion in biathlon.
In the unofficial 37.5 km relay race at the 1961 World Championships, Klas Lestander finished third with the Swedish team. Until 2010, he was the only Swede to win a gold medal in biathlon at the Men’s Olympic Games.
