Residents of Finland criticized the fence on the border with Russia, calling it “frivolous.” After criticism, they decided to improve the fence, reported MTV Uutiset with reference to project manager Ismo Kurki.
Construction of an iron lattice fence topped with barbed wire has begun at the eastern border point between the two countries. The first 3 km of the fence were built on October 26. However, the project to build the remaining 200 km of fence requires improvement, Kurki said.
Outrage was caused by the results of the construction of the first three kilometers of the fence, after which it was decided to change the approach to the construction of the remaining part. “In the future we will improve the quality of the fence network,” said the project manager. He added that it is planned to install additional mounts for networks on poles, create supports for cameras and pits for cables.
The Finnish parliament allocated 139 million euros to finance the construction of the fence. The government plans to build a fence on 10-20% of the border, which has a total length of 1.3 thousand km. In this way, about 130-260 km of fencing will be built.
