The Federation Council Committee supported the candidacy of Podnosova for the post of head of the Supreme Court

Following a preliminary discussion, the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building supported the candidacy of Deputy Head of the Supreme Court (SC) of Russia Irina Podnosova for the position of the new Chairman of the Supreme Court, reports “RIA News”. The Federation Council is expected to consider the issue of the appointment of Mrs. Podnosova at a plenary meeting tomorrow, April 17.
At the committee meeting, Irina Podnosova promised to continue working to humanize laws and law enforcement practices. “Humanism is a principle that is spelled out in the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. <...> The Supreme Court, of course, will systematically and constantly continue to work in this direction,” said Ms. Podnosova.
The candidate for the post of head of the Supreme Court added that the court has always supported punishments alternative to imprisonment. Commenting on proposals to lift the moratorium on the death penalty, she said that this is the power of senators and “how the issue is resolved, we will carry it out.” At the same time, she clarified that her opinion coincides with the position of the former head of the Armed Forces Vyacheslav Lebedev, who spoke about the impossibility of returning the death penalty.
April 1 High Qualification Board of Judges recommended Irina Podnosova for the post of Chairman of the Supreme Council. April 9 her candidacy contributed for consideration by the Federation Council, President Vladimir Putin.
The post of Chairman of the Supreme Court became vacant on February 23, when Vyacheslav Lebedev died. He has held it since 1991. The duties of the Chairman of the Supreme Council were temporarily assigned to First Deputy Peter Serkov.
