The Federation Council (FC) Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building recommended that the chamber reappoint Valery Zorkin as Chairman of the Constitutional Court (CC). The senators also recommended appointing Mikhail Lobov to the position of judge of the Constitutional Court. The Federation Council will consider these issues at a plenary meeting today, September 25.
The head of the Constitutional Court thanked the senators for their trust and assured them that he would “honestly and conscientiously perform his functions.” “Basically, I’m already at the age when I was preparing for anything, and I have to look at it quite matter-of-factly. And at the same time, I’m happy, because heaven has decreed that I live, I’m happy, my head is still working, it seems to me,” he said (quoted by TASS).
Mr. Zorkin headed the Constitutional Court from 1991 to 1993, after which he was reappointed to this post in 2003. In February 2023 he turned 80 years old. There is no age limit for the chairman of the Constitutional Court in Russia; the head of the court is approved every six years. On September 22, the Federation Council received a proposal from President Vladimir Putin about the appointment of Valery Zorkin for a new term.
