The head of the Federation Council commission for the protection of state sovereignty, Andrei Klimov, commented on the proposal of the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, not to hold presidential elections during hostilities on the territory of Ukraine. Mr. Klimov noted that “no one is going to change the Constitution,” but “any citizen has the right to make proposals.”
“There is a Constitution of the Russian Federation. I believe that it should be the main guideline for everyone. I would put an end to this,” Mr. Klimov told Russian journalists during his visit to Ankara (quote from “RIA News”). He added that Russia is a free country and any citizen has the right to make proposals. “Especially when this is not just a citizen, but a well-known politician,” he noted.
Yesterday, October 7, Ramzan Kadyrov offered cancel the Russian presidential elections scheduled for March 17, 2024 due to the military operation in Ukraine. As another option, he proposed holding a vote with a single candidate, incumbent President Vladimir Putin, “because we don’t have another person who could defend our country today.”
President Vladimir Putin has not yet announced his intention to run for another presidential term. According to Kommersant’s sources, the current head of state may announce his nomination for a new term in November during the international exhibition and forum “Russia” in Moscow.
