Council of the Federation approved a law that would make women eligible for parole if their child is under four years old.
Now, according to the Criminal Code, parole can be used when serving at least a quarter of the sentence for crimes of minor gravity by a pregnant woman or the mother of a child under three years old who is in the children’s home of a correctional institution. Such women are also given the right to have the unserved part of their sentence replaced with a more lenient one.
A draft law increasing the age of children whose mothers can apply for parole was submitted to the State Duma by the Russian government on February 1, 2023. On November 28, it was adopted by State Duma deputies in the third reading. The document, if signed by President Vladimir Putin, will come into force 180 days after its official publication.
