The Federation Council approved a law banning gender reassignment

The Federation Council at a meeting on July 19 supported the law banning gender reassignment, except when necessary for medical reasons, informs “Parliamentary newspaper”. On July 14, the law was adopted by the State Duma.

The changes establish a ban on surgical operations and hormonal therapy, as well as on any other medical interventions aimed at forming a person’s primary or secondary sexual characteristics of the opposite sex.

Exceptions will apply to medical interventions related to the treatment of congenital anomalies, genetic and endocrine diseases associated with impaired formation of the genital organs in children. The decision to conduct such operations will be made by the medical commission.

In addition, citizens who have changed their gender will not be able to adopt a child, become guardians or trustees. The marriage will also be annulled in the event of a sex change by one of the spouses. The law also prohibits changing gender in documents, and certificates of gender reassignment, on which a person has performed an operation, but has not yet changed his passport, will be canceled.

The document amends the federal law “On the fundamentals of protecting the health of citizens in the Russian Federation”, the law “On acts of civil status” and the Family Code.

The bill was introduced by a group of nearly 400 deputies headed by Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of the lower house of parliament. He explained the introduction of such restrictions by the protection of citizens. According to him, gender reassignment is a “monstrous trend” that leads to the degeneration of the nation.
