Russian President Vladimir Putin will not go to the BRICS summit in South Africa, Moscow will be represented by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. About it reported in the press office of the South African President.
“By mutual agreement, Russian President Vladimir Putin will not participate in the summit, but Russia will be represented by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov,” the statement said.
The press service of the President of South Africa specified that the leaders of Brazil, India, China and South Africa are planning to attend the BRICS summit.
The BRICS summit (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) will be held in South Africa from 22 to 24 August. It will be held in person for the first time in three years.
The fact that Putin received an invitation to the summit became known in the end of April. However, the Russian leader’s visit is complicated by a March 17 warrant issued for his arrest by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.
Earlier, Peskov noted that Putin would make a decision on a trip to the summit “closer to the point”, and stressed that Russia “in any case will actively participate” in the work of the BRICS, since he considers “this is a very important association, the relevance of which is constantly increasing.”
