The father of Ukrainian tennis player Elizaveta Kotlyar Konstantin commented handshake daughters with Russian athlete Vlada Mincheva during the junior Australian Open. According to him, this was a mistake. His words are quoted by the Ukrainian Tennis Federation on social networks.
“Unfortunately, my daughter did not feel calm, her emotions were overwhelming, so she did not fully control her behavior. She automatically performed the post-match ritual – she shook her opponent’s hand… This, of course, was a mistake, which Lisa very much regrets and assures that he will never allow anything like this again,” the Ukrainian federation reports the words of Father Kotlyar.
The man also attributed the incident to the fact that the Ukrainian woman was under pressure from the atmosphere at the stadium, since she was only 16 years old and did not have enough experience of performing at such competitions.
In turn, the Ukrainian Tennis Federation itself once again announced that it supports the position of athletes not to shake hands with Russian opponents.
The meeting between Kotlyar and Mincheva ended in victory for the Russian with a score of 6:2, 6:4.
