The expert explained why the West needs anti-Russian sanctions

Anti-Russian sanctions for the West are currently more important as a signal of intention to support Ukraine, says Alexander Shirov, director of the Institute of National Economic Forecasting of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
In a conversation with RIA Novosti, he noted that the desire to weaken Russia is no longer a priority, and new sanctions should be expected.
“Each new round of sanctions is important for them not in terms of results, but as an informational occasion demonstrating that the EU continues to support Ukraine,” Shirov said.
At the same time, he noted that the sanctions certainly had an impact on the Russian economy, and the sanctions regime is becoming more and more stringent, but it did not achieve its main goal.
Shirov also pointed out that by introducing sanctions, the West first of all hoped to inflict rapid and unacceptable damage on Russia in order to cause discontent among the population and business.
“Nothing like that, however, happened,” he concluded.
