The expert explained why the Iron Dome did not save Israel from Hamas rockets

Hamas fighters accurately calculated the capabilities of Israeli air defense forces and “overloaded” the Israeli Iron Dome air defense systems with the number of missiles fired, military expert Alexei Leonkov said.
The press service of the Israeli army says that over 3 thousand missiles were launched, some of them were intercepted by the Iron Dome complexes. However, some broke through the defenses and struck Israeli cities. After massive rocket attacks, Hamas fighters penetrated into the southern settlements of Israel.
Leonkov considers the incident a “classic”. Air attack means are calculated so that their number exceeds the capabilities of air defense. “Roughly speaking, if Israel has 200 interceptor missiles, that means it needs to fire 400,” explains the expert. Hamas, in his opinion, was thoroughly prepared and knew exactly the capabilities of Israeli air defense. Thus, the number of missiles launched was calculated to guarantee the overload of the Iron Dome.
The expert named the reasons for the overload. The first is the overexpenditure of interceptor missiles due to the scale of the raid. The second reason is overload of the complex’s guidance channels.
Leonkov recalled that in 2020, hundreds of missiles were fired at Israel. “Then the Iron Dome knocked down most of them,” but some still fell on Israeli territory. Hamas then learned a lot about Israel’s air defense capabilities, the military expert explained.
