The common horror story for all drinking people – to get methanol instead of ethanol – has now become a reality. Dozens of people in Ulyanovsk, Samara, Nizhny Novgorod and Udmurtia became victims (alas, with a fatal outcome) of low-quality alcohol. In the headlines they write: “Poisoned by cider.” In fact, everything is somewhat more complicated – on the label of this poison it was written: “clarified filtered apple beer drink.” In other words, a cocktail. It’s not beer or cider, it’s just some kind of low-alcohol drink. However, we have yet to understand the difference – and not everyone will understand.

“According to the results of 14 examinations, methanol and ethyl butyrate impurities were found in liquids in proportions that pose a threat to the life and health of consumers. The study of the remaining seized continues, ”the press service of the Russian Interior Ministry’s department for the Ulyanovsk region said in a statement. These words alone should give rise to doubts: what did people drink? Not cider, of course. Real cider (as well as real beer) could not get methanol for one simple reason: alcohol is not used in the production of these drinks! In the production of wine, by the way, too. Beer, wine and cider are products of natural fermentation, they have only their own alcohol.

Low-alcohol drinks are masters of disguise: they successfully pretend not only to gin and tonic or whiskey-cola, but also to wine or champagne. If you look down in the supermarket and look at the shelf with the cheapest sparkling wines, pick up a bottle and read the back label, you will find that this is not sparkling wine at all and not wine at all – a wine drink. Simply put, almost any soda with a degree. Counter-labels, by the way, are generally useful to read – thanks to them you can find out, for example, that supposedly French wine was bottled somewhere near Saratov. But this is so, by the way.

Low-alcohol drinks are a phenomenon well known to any adult Russian: in the 1990s and 2000s, the counters of our stores were littered with cans and plastic bottles with “delicious” cocktails like gin and tonic … in which, of course, there was only a name from gin and tonic. Such drinks are simple and cheap to produce: producers do not need to depend, like real winemakers and cidermakers, on grapes or apples. There would be water, alcohol, flavoring and sweetener – well, a sucker to whom you can sell it.

Independent expert Aleksey Nebolsin emphasizes that producers of poisonous swill from the Ulyanovsk region were not registered in the EGAIS (Unified State Automated Information System for Recording the Volume of Production and Turnover of Ethyl Alcohol, Alcoholic and Alcohol-Containing Products), therefore, it is unacceptable to speak of them as full-fledged producers of alcoholic beverages.

“It is quite obvious that this is an ordinary shalman, in which cheap ingredients are mixed with ethyl alcohol and released under the guise of “beer drinks” in order to reduce the excise. In fact, the manufacturer produces cocktails with flavorings and the addition of ethyl alcohol, where, obviously, methanol got into. Also, the poisoning happened from a draft drink. As you know, from April 1 of this year, all draft products (in kegs) must be labeled and, as labeling supporters promised us, be protected from such cases. How such products got into the store two months after the start of labeling is a question. From today, alas, the authorities have a nominal reason for tightening and lifting the moratorium on inspections of brewing products,” the expert explains.

Therefore, this mass poisoning will have more victims – by-products: victims of a destroyed reputation. Which will suffer, unfortunately, out of the blue. You need to understand: a lot of people, alas and ah, read the news diagonally and react only to the headlines. What will be stored in their memory? Someone got poisoned by cider – it means that drinking cider is dangerous. All point. Nuances – more precisely, the fact that it was not cider at all – few people will remember.

“A blow of monstrous force to ciders was inflicted by a Samara manufacturer simply because he decided to call his drink “Mr. Cider”. Such parasitism not only kills the market, it sometimes kills people who trust the established reputation of the drink. A buyer who is not too picky should clearly understand WHAT EXACTLY he is buying,” says wine expert Alexei Sinelnikov.
