The Industrial Court of Perm found the former head of the Center for Historical Memory, Alexander Chernyshov, guilty of attempted smuggling and sentenced him to three years of suspended imprisonment. After the verdict was announced, Mr. Chernyshov was released from custody.

Alexander Chernyshov was detained in May 2023 at Sheremetyevo Airport. At first he was placed in a special detention center for administratively arrested people, and later, by court decision, he was sent to a pre-trial detention center. According to the FSB, Mr. Chernyshov, together with the former head of the Perm “Memorial” (the organization was included in the register of foreign agents, liquidated by court decision) Robert Latypov (recognized as a foreign agent), tried to send part of the archive of the Perm “Memorial” to Germany. These materials have been recognized as cultural property. Experts estimated the cost of the documents at 380 thousand rubles.

During the investigation, Mr. Chernyshov admitted guilt, entered into a pre-trial agreement with the prosecutor’s office and testified against other defendants involved in the removal of the archive. Despite this, the prosecutor’s office demanded the court assigns Mr. Chernyshov a real sentence of three years in prison.
