The European Union intends to increase its defense potential to counter Russia. About it reports Politico with reference to the draft declaration of the Granada summit.
“We will strengthen our defense readiness and develop Europe’s defense technology and industrial base, including through increased investment,” Politico quoted a text prepared for an informal leaders’ meeting in Granada, Spain next week.
According to the publication, the so-called Granada Declaration is aimed at preparing the political course of the European Commission and addresses issues of competitiveness, migration and EU enlargement. The text claims that the EU will strengthen “European sovereignty and is a geostrategic investment in peace, security, stability and prosperity on our continent.”
Politico admits the draft statement may change.
From July 1, Spain took over the presidency of the Council of the EU for six months, so the next summit of the European Political Community will begin on October 5 in Granada, Spain. Supposedthat this will be the first official meeting dedicated to EU enlargement.
