Guatemala’s elected president, Bernardo Arevalo, has decided to resume the transfer of power, which he suspended after prosecutors raided the vote-counting center. This was announced by current President Alejandro Giammattei. Arevalo said that they will openly inform about this process in the media. This decision has been recognized by the Organization of American States and can become an exemplary democratic decision for other countries. Arevalo’s inauguration ceremony is scheduled for January 14, 2024, as previously planned.
In early September, Arevalo reported that his rivals were trying to disrupt political stability in the country in order to prevent his inauguration. He later announced the suspension of the transfer of power after the discovery of about 160 ballot boxes at one of the vote-counting centers. Arevalo filed a complaint with Guatemala’s Supreme Court, demanding the resignation of prosecutors and called on citizens to take to the streets in support of his demands.
In the second round of the presidential election, which took place on August 20, Arevalo received more than 2.38 million votes. The President of Guatemala is elected for four years without the possibility of re-candidacy.
