Director General of the European Space Agency (ESA) Josef Aschbacher said in an interview Financial Times (FT) that his department is currently considering proposals for a spacecraft that could send European astronauts to the moon. According to the head of the ESA, this could happen in the next decade. Mr. Aschbacher believes that Europe needs the preparation of a manned mission to the Moon in order to keep up with the US, China and India in the global space race.
“What is happening now in the US, China and India is very impressive,” said the head of ESA. “If we evaluate the completely independent space projects in Europe, we can see that things are far from being at the same level. Therefore, I see many new opportunities here, although some of these opportunities have already been missed.”
In March, a group of independent experts commissioned the ESA to prepare report, which says there are about 100 lunar missions announced so far to take place by 2030, both from government agencies and private companies. And only in two of them does the European Space Agency play a leading role.
