MEPs have collected the necessary signatures to strip Orban of his voting rights
120 signatures are required for the petition to deprive Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban of the right to vote in the EU Council, said the initiator of the petition, Member of the European Parliament Petri Sarvamaa.
The proposal could be considered by the EP as early as next week.
At the same time, decisions of the European Parliament are recommendations for the EU Council. To deprive Orban of the right to vote in the EU Council, the unanimous consent of the Council itself, including the vote of Hungary, is required, which, of course, is unrealistic.
Large EU countries, led by Germany, have long been promoting the idea of abandoning the principle of unanimity in decision-making by EU countries, but so far it has not reached practical implementation.
