The European Court has declared illegal the ban on football clubs playing in the Super League

The European Court has declared illegal the ban imposed by the International Football Federation (FIFA) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) on football clubs from participating in the Super League. UEFA said the court’s decision does not mean approval of the Super League.
“FIFA and UEFA do not have a monopoly on club competitions in Europe. Inter-club competitions such as the Super League can officially be created in accordance with European law,” the court said (.pdf).
In response statement UEFA said the court’s decision highlights already existing shortcomings in the union’s pre-authorization system. UEFA continues to support the existing football system and define a model of cooperation with national sports associations, the statement said.
Super League director Bernd Reichart wrote on the social network X (formerly Twitter) that football got rid of the UEFA monopoly and “became free.” Clubs, he said, will no longer “suffer from threats and sanctions” and will be able to independently choose their future.
In April 2021, 12 European football clubs announced the creation of a new tournament – the Super League. A few days later, most teams announced their withdrawal from the project, with the exception of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus. The latter club also later withdrew from the Super League, and UEFA opened disciplinary proceedings against Real Madrid and Barcelona.
