The EU refused to give Ukraine “discounts” upon accession

President of the Council of the European Union Charles Michel said in an interview with Spiegel that Kyiv will not receive concessions in the process of joining the EU.
According to him, he supports Ukraine’s entry by 2030, but under certain conditions.
“Ukraine could join the EU in 2030 if both sides do their homework,” Michel said.
He also demanded, among other things, that the EU speed up its “decision-making processes.” According to him, the European Union, by quickly accepting Ukraine, “will prove that it is capable of geopolitical actions.”
At the same time, he emphasized that there will be no political “discounts” either for Ukraine or for candidates for joining the EU – in addition to Turkey, these are six Western Balkan states and Moldova.
“Ukraine and other candidate countries must implement reforms, fight corruption and comply with legal requirements,” Michel said.
Earlier, Politico reported that the conflict will not prevent Brussels and Kyiv from starting negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU. An official announcement of the start of negotiations is expected in December. At the same time, the publication notes, in order to begin negotiations on membership, Ukraine needs to fulfill seven conditions. But even the Ukrainian government admitted that as of August only two of them had been implemented.
