The European Union has expressed serious concern over reports of Russian plans to create a permanent naval base for the Black Sea Fleet in Abkhazia. About it reported on the EU diplomatic service website.

“If Russia continues to implement its stated plans, this will lead to further increased tension and a threat to stability in the region,” the report said.

The agreement between Moscow and Sukhumi on the construction of a new base for the Russian Navy in the Ochamchira region of Abkhazia was announced by the President of Abkhazia Aslan Bzhania. The joint 7th Russian military base is already located on the territory of Abkhazia. From August 21 to September 1, 2023, joint Russian-Abkhaz military special and tactical exercises took place there. The Kremlin did not comment on this information, but forwarded the question to the Ministry of Defense.
