The EU does not recognize the presidential elections in Nagorno-Karabakh

The European Union does not recognize the legitimacy of the presidential elections that ended in the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR), reported EU foreign policy service.
“In connection with the so-called “presidential elections” in Stepanakert on September 9, the European Union reiterates that it does not recognize the constitutional and legal framework within which they were held,” the statement said.
At the same time, the EU emphasized that they consider it important to consolidate the residents of the NKR around the actual leadership, which wants and can conduct a dialogue with Baku aimed at results.
“The EU is committed to supporting this process,” it added.
As it became known earlier, the President of the NKR on September 9 was elected Samvel Shahramanyan, who replaced Arayik Harutyunyan in this post, who had headed the republic since 2020. The procedure took place during an extraordinary session of the NKR National Assembly on the issue of the presidential elections in Artsakh. 23 deputies took part in the closed secret ballot; only one person did not support Shahramanyan’s candidacy.
Samvel Shahramanyan served in the Karabakh Defense Army in the 1990s, then worked in the national security service of the republic. Since March 2023, Shahramanyan became the secretary of the NKR Security Council and took part in negotiations on the Lachin corridor. On August 31, by presidential decree, he was appointed Minister of State of Artsakh.
