The European Union has decided to evacuate its citizens from Niger. Josep Borrell, head of the EU foreign policy service, announced this.
“For now, we have decided to suspend budgetary support for Niger, as well as all security cooperation activities. We have also decided on the repatriation of European citizens and are carrying out this operation,” told Borrell (his words are quoted on the blog of the EU diplomatic service).
Borrell noted that the commissions in charge of humanitarian aid would remain in Niger and “try to limit the negative effects of the coup.” According to him, in the future, the EU may join the decisions of the Economic Community of West African Countries (ECOWAS) to restore the constitutional order in the country.
The head of the foreign policy service noted that the EU supports the efforts of ECOWAS and the African Union and will not recognize the government that came as a result of the rebellion.

On July 27, the Niger military announced the removal of President Mohamed Bazum and the closure of the country’s borders. At the same time, a nationwide curfew was announced and the activities of all institutions of the republic were suspended. The rebels explained their actions by deteriorating security, economic and social problems. The UN Security Council later called on the rebels to release the country’s democratically elected president.
On July 30, at an emergency ECOWAS summit of 15 countries in the region, in the capital of neighboring Nigeria, Abuja, leaders of its member countries threatened to use military force if the rebels did not restore constitutional order and release the ousted president within a week. Members of the organization imposed sanctions against Niger.
