The EU reduced imports of oil and oil products from Russia in March to 1.4 million tons
In March 2023, imports of oil and oil products from the Russian Federation to the countries of the European Union decreased to 1.4 million tons. The indicators are given in the latest report of the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat).
The spring month figure is 90% below the usual average monthly shipments between 2019 and 2022, when it was 15.2 million tons.
The 6th package of sanctions against Russia, adopted in June last year, provided for the imposition of an embargo on the supply of oil and petroleum products to the EU. The ban on sea shipments of Russian oil came into force on December 5, 2022, and oil products – two months later, that is, on February 5, 2023.
Eurostat noted that the EU began to switch to the purchase of energy from other sources even before the entry of prohibitive measures.
