Dmitry Medvedev commented on the prospects for talks on Ukraine in Jeddah
Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev commented in his telegram channel on the negotiations on Ukraine in the city of Jeddah (Saudi Arabia). First of all, he noted that “it is difficult to condemn the desire to end the war” and recalled that in addition to sovereignty, the UN Charter also enshrined the right of nations to self-determination.
In his opinion, peace proposals have a chance of success if three key conditions are met. First, the participation of both sides of the conflict, which is not. Secondly, taking into account the historical context, which is as follows: “The country of Ukraine never existed before 1991. It is a fragment of the Russian Empire.”
And thirdly, current realities should be taken into account – “Ukraine is in the stage of half-life, and part of its territories has returned to Russia.”
“However, the negotiations themselves are not needed yet,” Medvedev believes, since “the enemy should crawl on his knees, begging for mercy.”
Saudi Arabia is holding talks on Ukraine in Jeddah, to which representatives of up to 30 countries are invited, but not Russia. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov previously noted that the Kremlin will monitor the meeting in Saudi Arabia.
