The Russian embassy in Lebanon is in contact with the authorities of the republic in connection with the detention of two Russian citizens at the Beirut airport, the circumstances of the incident are being investigated, reported TASS And “RIA News” in the Russian diplomatic mission.
“We are in touch with the Lebanese authorities and are awaiting permission from them for a meeting of consular workers with detained citizens,” TASS reported.
The RIA Novosti agency was also told that the embassy is aware of the situation with the detention of Russian citizens in Lebanon and “is taking the necessary steps to clarify the detailed circumstances.”
According to the Al Akhbar newspaper, last week, officers of the Lebanese General Security Directorate detained a Russian man and his wife at the Beirut airport. The material claimed that the man was recruited by Israeli intelligence and had previously visited the southern regions of Lebanon, where objects of the Shiite group Hezbollah are located.
