Finland’s accession to the EU sanctions against Russia has almost completely destroyed trade relations between the two countries, declared Izvestiya at the Russian Embassy in Helsinki. Diplomats are convinced that “new political realities in the relations of countries” were created by the completion on April 4, 2023 of the procedures related to Finland’s entry into NATO.
“In practice, by the time Helsinki joined the alliance, the base of the once close and mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation between our countries had already been almost completely destroyed by the efforts of the Finnish side,” the embassy said in a statement.
By data Rosstat, in 2021, the foreign trade turnover of Russia and Finland amounted to more than $13 billion. The Scandinavian country was the sixth largest trading partner of the Russian Federation in the European Union after Germany, the Netherlands, France, Italy and Poland.
On April 4, Finland joined NATO, becoming the 31st member of the alliance. The country applied to join the alliance in mid-May 2022, together with Sweden. On the night of March 31, the General Assembly of the Turkish Parliament approved a bill approving the protocol on Finland’s application to join NATO. The country was the last of the alliance’s 30 countries to not ratify Helsinki’s bid to join the military bloc.
Moscow considers the expansion of the alliance an encroachment on the security and national interests of the Russian Federation. About it declared Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov.
