Corriere della Sera: Uss’s electronic bracelet worked 20 times during house arrest
The electronic bracelet with which the son of the governor of the Krasnoyarsk Territory Artem Uss was under house arrest in Italy sounded alarms at least twenty times. This was reported on Wednesday by the newspaper Corriere della Sera.
The publication refers to the materials of the investigation. It is reported that the Milan prosecutor’s office, which is investigating the escape of Uss to Russia, instructed an expert to study the work of the bracelet for more than three months of his stay under arrest. It is noted that the signals coming from the device very often forced law enforcement officers to react.
A technician, after examining the operation of the bracelet, told investigators that none of these cases involved escape attempts. The signals were associated with bracelet malfunctions and problems with its connection. The article points out that this kind of anomaly in the operation of electronic bracelets is not uncommon when they are used to control house arrest.
The newspaper specifically emphasizes that the Milan prosecutor’s office ruled out that Uss intended in this way to “estimate the time” of the police response before fleeing.
According to the materials of the investigation, the US Attorney’s Office, seeking the extradition of Uss, requested the Italian colleagues to seize all electronic devices from the arrested Russian for the entire duration of the investigation. However, after Uss was transferred from prison to house arrest on December 2, he received them again. But on March 13, Italian law enforcement officers nevertheless deprived the arrested person of his gadgets.
On March 21, the Milan Court of Appeal approved Uss’s extradition to the United States, but he went into hiding on March 29. On April 4, Artem Uss announced that he was forced to escape from house arrest, because he does not believe in the objectivity of Italian justice. In Moscow, he voluntarily appeared at the Investigation Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, where his preventive measure was changed, taking from him a written undertaking not to leave.
