The eighth package of sanctions against Russia looks "leaky in advance"

Not all European countries had yet managed to say “I approve” of the 7th package of anti-Russian sanctions, as the 8th one already loomed on the horizon. With such an initiative, our closest neighbors, the Baltic republics, came to the European Commission. They proposed once again “hitting” domestic trade and energy, as well as once again limiting SWIFT.

This statement was made by Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu in an interview with a German publication. Concrete proposals have already been submitted to the EC. And with their implementation, the Balts are asking other Europeans not to shelve. Apparently, they believe that the 8th package of sanctions will now completely and irrevocably destroy the Russian economy. Like that mouse from a fairy tale: it ran, waved its tail, the golden egg fell and broke …

But what a misfortune for our Western ill-wishers. Moscow is surrounded by restrictions on all sides. And the ruble is stable, inflation is under control, the assortment of goods in stores has not decreased. The initiators of the 8th package will have to rack their brains to propose something more serious. After all, all significant sanctions that could be invented have long been implemented.

They tried to set a ceiling in the prices of Russian energy carriers, but it didn’t work out. Our ships were banned from entering European ports with export wheat – nothing came of it either. Our grain is coming along, albeit in a roundabout way.

It is not for nothing that the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, who can hardly be suspected of sympathy for Russia, recalls that the EU countries will soon face serious challenges and negative consequences of anti-Russian restrictive measures.

In fact, we have already encountered. Before winter, not relying on Russian gas, Bulgarians hastily buy pellet fuel (granular biofuel) in Turkey. In Poland, there is a queue for coal – the citizens of the country hope for potbelly stoves, which they did not have time to throw into the dustbin of history.

What additional tightening in the field of economics can the Europeans come up with – we ask financial analyst, candidate of economic sciences Mikhail Belyaev.

“As a holistic person, I look at the situation as a whole, not in detail,” he says. – My position is as follows: all the “springs” against Russia were introduced and used in the first, second, and third packages of anti-Russian sanctions. Basically they didn’t work.

Many of our ill-wishers have such a delusion: if they now clarify something, strengthen, specify some details, then the sanctions will immediately work, Russia will weaken. They will not work in principle, and this has already been proven by time!

You can impose additional restrictions on individuals, threaten them with a ban on entry into the country or confiscation of a villa or yacht. But even these measures, as we see, are not effective. You can declare “war” on some companies. But if their product is in demand on the market, or vice versa – they need some kind of product, then there will always be ways to get around the sanctions. It’s a business, it has its own laws…

Let’s look at energy carriers. As a result of anti-Russian sanctions, it’s not even about the fact that prices have jumped, but about the fact that raw materials are not physically available – no matter how much it costs. And when Europe disconnected itself from Russian supplies, it very quickly realized that all the other “faucets” would not give them such a volume as Russia did. Whatever energy prices are. They tried to block our financial channels and the system of mutual settlements – nothing came of it either.

– What about the SWIFT system? The new package calls for even more tightening of her blocking…

– SWIFT is an international system for the transfer of interbank financial messages. The banks themselves can conduct settlements among themselves in any way convenient for them. We have our own fast payment system and financial messaging system. Nobody from the West commands them. That is why I say: we will not feel any economic consequences after the next package of sanctions.

– But why did the Baltic states show the initiative?

– Everyone understands that from a political point of view, these are puppets. However, they need to assert themselves, to show the overseas patron that they are acting and not sitting idly by. Here they come up with different statements. These statements are heard in the political arena, but they have no practical significance in everyday life.
