The European Commission (EC) expects EU sanctions to plunge the Russian economy into recession for decades. This was announced on Tuesday, January 17, by Ursula von der Leyen, speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.
“We are imposing the strongest sanctions against the Russian Federation, which plunge the Russian economy into recession for decades, and its industry is deprived of modern and critical technologies,” she said.
Also during her speech, the head of the EC said that the EU was able to replace 80 percent of Russian pipeline gas.
Last week, Ursula von der Leyen announced the first aid package for Ukraine in January out of the previously approved amount of 18 billion euros.
