State Duma deputy Zhukova proposed to collect compensation from athletes who left
State Duma deputy Svetlana Zhurova proposed collecting compensation for the state’s contribution to career development from athletes who left Russia and plan to compete for other countries. He expressed this opinion in a conversation with the publication “Lenta.ru”.
She said that Russian athletes left five and 15 years ago, but most often to the CIS countries. According to Zhurova, this was due to high competition
“The competition in the Russian team was so high that they could not compete for our country; they had to go to Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Georgia. There they did not take first places, they simply performed, while continuing to train in Russia with their coaches,” said the former Soviet and Russian speed skater, adding that few athletes left for Europe and the USA, and those who did make such a decision, almost didn’t achieve anything.
However, according to the State Duma deputy, it makes no sense to introduce criminal liability for athletes who left Russia. In her opinion, it would be possible to consider compensation claims from such athletes.
“A team member receives a salary and goes to training camps. For the future, this point can be legally worked out: if a person received a salary, the state invested in him, and he leaves to compete for another country, let him return the money,” the parliamentarian concluded.
Previously two-time Olympic champion in saber fencing, Sophia the Great expressed hopethat all Olympians who have been suspended from international competitions will receive compensation from the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC).
