The State Duma has developed a bill that bans the registration of boys under female names and girls under male names. Izvestia writes about this, based on the document.
The initiator of the law was the first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Family, Women and Children, Tatyana Butskaya. According to her, today there are more and more cases when parents give their child a name that does not correspond to his gender. “…So, for example, at the birth of a girl, her parents gave her the name Mikhail,” the explanatory note says.
The author of the project does not provide any statistics on such incidents, but notes that now registry offices cannot refuse parents the deliberate choice of female names for boys and vice versa.
Butskaya emphasized that the law does not include names that are suitable for both sexes. No one is going to prohibit girls from giving names such as Pavla, Ivana, Petra, Misha and Romana – they are mainly popular in Eastern European countries, but can only be associated with male names, the deputy added.
“Now we are working together with professors who study not just the Russian language, but specialize in the topic of names…” concluded the deputy.
