The Duma added a phrase about Japan to the title of the Day of the end of World War II

State Duma deputies adopted in the third reading law on the clarification of the name of the day of military glory of Russia on September 3. Now this date will be called “September 3 – Day of Victory over militaristic Japan and the end of World War II (1945)”.
The name used so far is “September 3 – Day of the end of World War II (1945)”.
The initiative was introduced back in June last year by a group of deputies headed by Andrei Kartapolov, chairman of the Duma Defense Committee, and senators headed by Grigory Karasin. Amendments are made to Art. 1 of the law “On the days of military glory and memorable dates in Russia”.
The authors of the bill noted that during World War II, Japan wanted to achieve “world domination” and the day of victory over the aggressor was widespread in the USSR, but now the celebration of this date is regional in nature – in the Sakhalin Region, September 3 is called the “Day of the Liberation of South Sakhalin and the Kuril islands from the Japanese militarists.
The authors also called the initiative one of the countermeasures in connection with the anti-Russian position that Tokyo took after the start of the special operation in Ukraine. The wording about the victory over “militarist Japan” reflects, in their opinion, the principle of historical justice and indicates the importance for the world of overthrowing the political regime that operated in Japan in 1945.
Russia and Japan did not conclude a peace treaty following World War II because of the protracted dispute over the South Kuriles. The state of war between the two countries was officially ended in 1956, after which the USSR and Japan resumed diplomatic relations in accordance with the Moscow Declaration. According to the Japanese position, Russia must hand over to Japan the four southern islands of the Kuril chain. Moscow, on the other hand, recognizes the USSR declaration of 1956, which refers to the possibility of transferring the two islands after the conclusion of a peace treaty.
