The draft on raising the conscription age for those who have received citizenship was withdrawn from the Duma

State Duma deputies from United Russia Alexander Boroday and Mikhail Sheremet, after criticizing Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, withdrew their signatures on the bill to increase the conscription age to 50 years for men with acquired citizenship, it follows from cards project on the website of the lower house of parliament.

The card indicates that the initiators of the bill withdrew their signatures on the document and sent corresponding written statements to the State Duma. After this, only the chairman of the Rodina party, Alexey Zhuravlev (part of the Duma faction of the LDPR), was listed as the author of the draft law. In a commentary to RIA Novosti, Mr. Zhuravlev said that the document needs serious revision. “The signatures have already been withdrawn… We are left with the law to develop and include amendments that our colleagues want to make… It is proposed to hone the legal formulations, and this is always done with all documents that come to parliament until they are completely satisfactory for the majority of deputies,” he noted .

Later, information appeared on the State Duma website that the bill had been withdrawn by its authors from the lower house of parliament. The reasons for the document’s revocation were not specified.

The document was introduced in the State Duma the day before, February 1. The authors of the initiative pointed out that now natives of foreign countries who have become citizens of the Russian Federation avoid registering for military service or specifically wait until they reach the maximum conscription age (30 years) and only then receive a Russian passport.

Speaker of the Duma Vyacheslav Volodin statedthat the introduced bill must be withdrawn for revision. According to him, such initiatives need to be “comprehensively discussed” before introducing them into the “public plane.”

From January 1, 2024, the upper limit of conscription age in Russia was raised to 30 years, while the lower limit remained at 18 years. By law, a foreigner who has received Russian citizenship is required to register for military service within two weeks from the date of registration at his place of residence. Without a military ID, foreign citizens cannot work in Russia. In December, the government did not support the bill proposed by deputy Mikhail Matveev (Communist Party of the Russian Federation), which proposed to deprive draft dodgers of their acquired citizenship.
