“If your BMI is between 25 and 29.9, you are overweight,” explains Nechaeva.

If the BMI value is above 30, then, as the doctor stated, we can already talk about obesity: “BMI from 30 to 34.9 – obesity of the 1st degree, BMI from 35 to 39.9 – obesity of the 2nd degree, BMI – above 40 – obesity of the 3rd degrees.”

The endocrinologist noted that often in order to lose weight, it is necessary to review the diet. However, it happens that a person goes on a low-calorie diet, but does not achieve results. Often this is due to the fact that short-term diets do not work.

Nechaeva says that “it is necessary in principle to change the diet and stick to it for at least a year, and preferably all your life.”

According to her, the diet “should not be tough” – “consist of some restrictions” and “deprive a person of joy.” The doctor will help you make the right diet.

Nechaeva also drew attention to the fact that obesity is not a cosmetic defect, but a real medical problem. And it contributes to the development of formidable diseases, and also leads to a reduction in life expectancy and the development of joint diseases.

At the same time, the medical problem, according to her, is being treated. Including medication. However, such drugs are not suitable for a person whose task is to lose weight without harm to health – they cannot be taken for a long time.

In the treatment of obesity, the average goal is to lose 10% of weight per year, and this, as Nechaeva noted, can be considered healthy weight loss.

If the BMI is above 27, it is recommended to consult a doctor, especially for those people who suffer from diabetes and hypertension. And for women – also with polycystic ovary syndrome and if there is a general increase in blood cholesterol levels.

“In such cases, drug therapy is often indicated,” the doctor said.
