Olga Shuppo, scientific director of the network of clinics for immunorehabilitation and preventive medicine Grand Clinic, told “Gazete.Ru”that sleep of less than five hours can cause people over 50 years of age to develop chronic diseases, as well as exhaustion of the body.
According to her, such a risk was confirmed by the latest research by British scientists who have studied the data of more than 7,000 people over the age of 50 for 25 years. Schuppo noted that people over 50 who slept five hours or less had a 20% greater risk of chronic disease and a 40% greater chance of getting two or more chronic diseases. At the same time, with an increase in the duration of sleep, the risks of developing these ailments decrease.
The doctor also added that with a lack of sleep, immune defenses are weakened, and the body is exposed to various microbes and viruses. According to Schuppo, the optimal duration of sleep is 7-8 hours, and you should go to bed no later than 23:00.
