The figure skater has already been connected to a ventilator

According to media reports, the famous figure skater Roman Kostomarov was hospitalized with pneumonia after he performed in an ice show, which took place in one of the cities near Moscow in 25-degree frost. As a result, the health of the athlete was seriously undermined: the disease went so far that resuscitation and connection to a ventilator were required. In social networks, they began to discuss the situation and almost blame the athlete for risking his life for the sake of earning money, violating safety rules.

About what these rules say, the MK columnist learned from a sports doctor who wished to remain anonymous.

– Let’s start with the fact that historically all speed skating was born in the cold. Previously, there were no indoor skating rinks. Even now, many competitions are held outdoors or in outdoor sports facilities. Therefore, there are no special rules that prescribe at what temperature skaters or skaters can perform. Winters in Russia used to be more severe, but no one has ever canceled competitions just because frosts have set in.

Are there any temperature restrictions for other sports?

– I heard only about the restrictions associated with bandy. If the air temperature is below -32C, then not two halves of 45 minutes are played, but three halves of 15 minutes. We don’t have any restrictions on skiing, but I remember when there was an Olympics in Beijing, severe frosts came there and a strong wind rose, in connection with which the skiers ran the distance not for 50 kilometers, but for 30. There are frosts not only in Russia . But I have not heard that figure skating competitions have been canceled somewhere because of the cold. I repeat, many sports events and trainings are held in open areas. And for an athlete, the main thing is immunity, it is the main component of health. In addition, I do not have reliable information about what is actually happening with Roman Kostomarov, perhaps much of what the media reports, they report to increase readability, speculating on the topic of health.

– And yet in schools, for example, ski classes are canceled when it is too cold outside. In our country, I remember, they were forbidden if it was colder than -30 outside …

– Where did you study?

– In the Moscow region.

– I studied in the Urals, we had a bar at -38C. And in the regions closer to Yakutsk, schoolchildren stop going to school only if it is below -42C outside. Each region has its own norms, but they have nothing to do with athletes. Athletes are hardy people and often work out in any weather. So I don’t think that the reason for Roman’s illness was the performance in the cold.
