The former director of the Institute for the USA and Canada of the Russian Academy of Sciences, historian Valery Garbuzov, who was fired after the publication of an article in Nezavisimaya Gazeta, published new material. In response to criticism of the previous article, Valery Garbuzov writes that it outlined the ideas that are contained in hundreds of scientific papers by Russian historians, political scientists and sociologists. He recalled that the Western vector began to take shape in Russia a long time ago. “From Europe through Poland and Lithuania, the Baltic and Byzantium, he reached our country (whose name then, however, was different). But it was finally fixed with the reforms of Peter I.
The historian also writes that the informal, cultural expansion of large countries, such as the United States or Russia, is a natural world development. “From now on, no one will be able to eradicate Western influence, roll it under asphalt, wall it up in concrete (I use the most innocent vocabulary adopted in television talk shows) segments of Western culture and way of life, just as it will not be possible to expel Russian culture from the Western space,”— he supposes.
The scientist addressed those who are “saturated with anti-Western and anti-American sentiments” and stated that this is “a very serious and even very dangerous disease.” Valery Garbuzov noted that throughout history, Russia and the United States have had the most diverse palette of relations: “from allied to sharply confrontational.” “Even by virtue of this fact, I dare to assume: someday another time will come, and they will change. Simply because of banal patterns: evolution is inevitable in everything, including in this area, ”he wrote.
Valery Garbuzov also stated that he was in no way connected by “some invisible but strong threads” with the White House, the Capitol and other “Washington masters”. “My works do not contain calls for the overthrow of the current government, and I myself am clean before my Motherland, which I am not going to leave under any circumstances,” the scientist wrote.
Mr. Garbuzov added that ISKRAN employees are engaged in “not political propaganda”, but “critical understanding of events and processes taking place in the surrounding world”, including the study of the United States and Canada.
Valery Garbuzov has been director of the Institute for the US and Canadian Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 2016.
