The development of deaf sports was discussed at a round table in Arkhangelsk

The capital of Pomorie successfully hosted the country’s first 3×3 Basketball Super Cup among the deaf, which opened the new gaming season of the “Silent! Basketball” project.

Simultaneously with the tournament, a round table was held at the Nord Arena sports development center on the topic “Development of sports for the deaf in the Arkhangelsk region.” The discussions were attended by the vice-president of the All-Russian Sports Federation for Sports of the Deaf Vladimir Berezhkov, the director of the sports adaptive school of the Paralympic and Deaflympic reserve Ekaterina Zhdanova, the chairman of the regional branch of the All-Russian Society of the Deaf Marina Korzhavina, as well as sports coaches for the deaf Alexander Chernov and Ivan Suprun.

“In recent years, representatives of sports for people with disabilities have managed to achieve good results,” noted Vladimir Berezhkov. – This year in Russia there will be 458 competitions among deaf athletes, that is, almost every day there is some kind of tournament. This could not be done without the support of the regions. Therefore, our joint work with you is very important for the development of adaptive sports.

The round table participants discussed the experience and problems of developing sports for the deaf in the Arkhangelsk region and agreed to establish a dialogue between all interested parties.

“We work in conjunction with the regional branch of the All-Russian Society of the Deaf,” said Ekaterina Zhdanova. – Arkhangelsk residents with disabilities take an active part in the “Cross of the Nation” and “Walking Day”. Together with Northern (Arctic) Federal University we are preparing specialists in the field of adaptive sports. For four years, deaf sports have been one of the basic sports in the Arkhangelsk region, and holding the 3×3 Basketball Super Cup in the capital of Pomorie will give us invaluable experience and will contribute to the further development of adaptive sports in the region.

Representatives of the Arkhangelsk region proposed holding the Russian championship in athletics among deaf athletes under the age of 23, as well as competitions in this sport not only in summer, but also in winter.

They also said that usually the number of participants in competitions for people with disabilities is small. In this regard, a problem arises with the fulfillment and confirmation of sports categories and titles, and this, in turn, affects the further inclusion of athletes in regional teams and their sending to tournaments. Therefore, adjustments to the legislative framework are necessary.
