After the destruction of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station in the Kherson region, according to updated data, 48 people died, informed an emergency services representative in a commentary to RIA Novosti.
“According to updated information, on Monday morning, the death toll during the breakthrough of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station increased to 48 people,” he said.
June 22 Chairman of the regional government Andrey Alekseenko informed about 46 victims of the disaster. The affected settlements began to “come back to life,” he said at the time.
The breakthrough of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station occurred on the night of June 6. As a result of the incident, 11 out of 28 spans of the station were destroyed, after which an uncontrolled discharge of water began. The water level reached approximately 11 m. The Russian and Ukrainian authorities blame each other for what happened.
On June 21, the acting governor of the Kherson region, Volodymyr Saldo, announced the return of the Dnieper to its natural banks, but the lower reaches of the river became a zone of ecological disaster as a result of the destruction of the dam.
The total damage to the Kherson region authorities, according to preliminary data, is estimated at 40 billion rubles. Earlier, Saldo said that the restoration of the HPP will take 1.5-2 years and 200 billion rubles. At the same time, it will be possible to begin restoration work only after the end of hostilities, he stressed.
