The daughter of the disgraced ex-president of Uzbekistan Gulnara Karimova in the West continues to be cynically “undressed”

Three countries have already “nationalized” her apartments and mansions.

While the daughter of the first president of Uzbekistan, Islam Karimov, Gulnara continues to serve her term in a women’s colony near Tashkent, the world continues to investigate her acts of corruption. On August 8, the British Supreme Court ruled to confiscate three properties belonging to Gulnara Karimova. We are talking about two apartments in the London area of ​​Belgravia and a mansion in Surrey. The total value of these properties is more than 20 million pounds ($25.5 million).

The Serious Fraud Office filed a lawsuit to seize the British assets of the eldest daughter of the first president of Uzbekistan back in 2018. According to the SFO, the property was purchased with funds obtained as a result of corruption schemes. “Karimova received hundreds of millions of dollars in bribes from telecommunications companies between 2004 and 2012 in exchange for helping them gain market access in Uzbekistan,” the bureau explained to the court. As a result, the court sided with the plaintiff – three objects of Karimova’s elite real estate were transferred under the control of the SFO.

In total, according to Freedom for Eurasia, Gulnara Karimova acquired five properties in the UK through front companies – for 50 million pounds. But two apartments managed to be resold in 2013. There are two more – worth 8 million pounds ($10.4 million) and 2 million pounds ($2.6 million). Like a real princess, Gulnara bought herself in Britain and a real castle in 2010 – Gorse Hill Manor in Surrey. At the time of purchase, the 1912 mansion was worth 18 million pounds ($23 million).

Gulnara Karimova, we recall, disappeared from the political space of Uzbekistan back in 2015. Even during the life of Islam Karimov, she was sentenced to five years in prison for assisting a criminal group that was engaged in embezzlement, extortion of money from entrepreneurs, and tax evasion. In 2017, Karimova added ten years in prison, but then reduced the sentence to five years, allowing her to serve her sentence at her daughter’s home. However, in 2019, Gulnara was again sent to a colony for repeated violations of the regime of being under arrest. And in 2020, already in a new case of creating a criminal community engaged in embezzlement of state funds and extortion, her prison term was increased to 13 years.

In parallel, the process of “dispossession” of the eldest daughter of the first president was going on. Uzbekistan intends, if possible, to return to the country all the funds hidden by Gulnara in accounts in different countries. The Ministry of Justice of Uzbekistan estimates Gulnara Karimova’s foreign assets at $1.4 billion. They have already managed to return $20 million from France, where Karimova’s apartments in Paris and her Chateau de Grousset castle were sold under the hammer. In 2020, Uzbekistan reached an agreement with Switzerland on the return of nearly $131 million to Karimova from Swiss accounts. The funds will go to a special trust fund Uzbekistan Vision 2030, from which they will be transferred to the needs of the country’s population. In total, Switzerland blocked Karimova’s accounts in the amount of 800 million francs ($912 million).

In February 2022, by decision of the Moscow City Court, six Moscow apartments of Gulnara were confiscated. According to the court decision, the funds received from their resale in equal shares will be turned in favor of Uzbekistan and Russia. And the amount is rather big. Only one penthouse of Gulnara Karimova, located in the Radisson hotel, is estimated at 1.6 billion rubles.

Meanwhile, Gulnara’s daughter Iman Karimova, who left Uzbekistan immediately after her mother’s last detention and has been living in London all this time, has arrived in Tashkent for the first time in four years. And not alone, but together with her cousin Miriam Tillyaeva, the daughter of Gulnara Lola’s sister. Gulnara quarreled with Lola long before her arrest. The sisters did not speak for many years, respectively, they did not allow their daughters to communicate either. And now, grown-up Iman and Miriam found each other on their own and came together to Uzbekistan – to visit their grandfather’s grave.
