There is very little left before the start of the World Cup in Qatar – less than two months. Perhaps no other major world football tournament, even before it even started, has been involved in such an ongoing stream of scandals. And every day there are more and more of them. “MK” thinks: maybe it’s better not to hold it at all?
In the summer of 2018, Russia hosted the 21st FIFA World Cup. The best teams came to our country. After the end of this magical sports festival, everyone unanimously recognized that there had never been such a wonderful championship in the history. How unimaginably distant those happy days seem today!
The next final of the world championship in 2022 was entrusted by the international federation to be held by Qatar. Repeatedly after that regretted his decision. But he didn’t give up on the choice he made.
And it really wasn’t a good choice. Initially, it was more politics than common sense. For which FIFA will pay for a long time.
Well, in fact, how can football fans, who are not used to limiting themselves in anything, and a country that is quite strict in terms of observing the norms of Islam, combine? Sometimes it seems that the time and nerves spent on various negotiations and coordination with the authorities of Qatar, about which MK has repeatedly written, would be more than enough for ten World Cup finals in Europe or America.
At the same time, the participants of the World Cup themselves do not think to calm down. Here are just the latest reports of one of the many scandals of this “feast of the football spirit.”

On September 28, the news broke that the Danish national football team would wear black uniforms in the championship as a protest against human rights violations in Qatar. According to a spokesman for the sportswear company, the uniform would symbolize “the color of mourning.”
“With our uniform, we want to draw attention to the human rights situation in Qatar,” the Danish outfitter was quoted by Reuters as saying.
It’s good at least that they will not have the only black uniform. The same company released another kit – red, dedicated to the success of the Danes at Euro 92, when they won their only title.
In addition to the political demarche of (no other way to put it) Denmark and the harsh criticism from various human rights groups for the treatment of migrant workers, the Football Association of England also said that the families of migrant workers in Qatar who were injured or killed while building infrastructure for the championship world this year should receive compensation. Perhaps the form of the English team will be somehow devoted to this issue.

If you leave sarcasm and seriously think about what such demarches can lead to, then it becomes very, very sad. Because football, like all sports in general, has recently become more and more the arena of political manifestations of certain principles of individual social groups and public institutions. The attention of hundreds of millions of people is riveted to any major international tournament, which means that any political action at it is much more effective than other ways of conveying one’s point of view to the target audience. And this completely kills the very meaning of holding such sporting events.
The famous writer and playwright John Galsworthy, who in his youth achieved great success in football and cricket, once said: “The saving force in our world is sport – it still flies the flag of optimism, here they follow the rules and respect the enemy, regardless of on whose side is the victory? Today, that power has gone over to the dark side.
So, maybe it’s better not to hold the championship in Qatar at all? Given all the scandals associated with him, it’s already scary how it all might end up in the end.
