In 2022, more than 10 million electric vehicles were sold worldwide, including battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. This is 55% more than in 2021 and a new record for such sales. This year, sales of electric vehicles are expected to grow by another 35%, to 14 million. Such data are given in report International Energy Agency (IEA) on growth forecasts for the global electric vehicle market.

There are now over 26 million electric vehicles in use around the world, which is 60% more than in 2021. The largest markets for this mode of transport are China, Europe and the United States, they account for 95% of all sales of electric vehicles in the world in 2022. China leads with a 60% share of sales in 2022. There are currently 13.8 million electric vehicles in operation in China, which means that more than half of all electric vehicles in use in the world drive on the roads of this country.

In Europe, which remains the world’s second largest market for electric vehicles, sales grew by more than 15% year-on-year, with 2.7 million electric vehicles sold. This is less significant growth than in 2020 and 2021, and it is the records of those years that the IEA explains a slight slowdown in sales in 2022. Europe’s share of sales in 2022 was 25%, and its share of all electric vehicles in the world reached 30%. The largest European market for electric vehicles is Germany, where 830,000 cars were sold last year. It is followed by the UK (370 thousand) and France (330 thousand) by a wide margin. At the same time, among European countries in which the share of electric vehicles in total car sales, Norway is the absolute leader with a share of 88%. In Germany, this share is 31%, in the UK – 23%, in France – 21%.

The US remains the third largest market for electric vehicles. Sales of this type of transport for the year there grew by 55%. The total number of electric vehicles on US roads has grown by 40% in a year and reached 3 million. This is 10% of the total number of electric vehicles in the world.

Thanks to this strong sales growth, the share of electric vehicles in the total car market has grown from 4% in 2020 to 14% in 2022. In 2023, the IEA predicts, this share will grow to 18%.

Commenting on these data, the head of the IEA, Fatih Birol, noted that “the trends observed now are largely reflected in the demand for oil in the world.” “The internal combustion engine has existed without any competition for more than a century, but electric vehicles are changing that status quo. By 2030, thanks to them, demand will decrease by at least 5 million barrels of oil per day,” he said, adding that electric vehicles are only the first wave, followed by electric buses and electric trucks.

Data on sales of electric vehicles in Russia are not provided in the IEA report.
