In the Lublin Court of Moscow, the consideration of the case of the poisoning of a whole family with a watermelon in the south-east of the capital in September 2021 has come to an end. The mysterious death of an elderly woman and her 14-year-old granddaughter made a lot of noise. According to investigators, the disinfectant was to blame for the tragedy, which treated the shop hall where the family bought the berries, in violation of safety rules. The hearings were held behind closed doors, but MK managed to find out some details.
41-year-old Anton Kotov treated the hall of the Magnit store on Sovkhoznaya Street with cygatrine. This potent insecticide is traditionally used to control cockroaches, fleas, ants and other insects. Kotov acted within the framework of an agreement that the store concluded with the organization where Kotov worked.
Many experts in hot pursuit have criticized the version according to which cygathrin got on watermelons and caused fatal poisoning. Experts said that the dangerous dose is too high – so much money is simply not used when processing the store. Kotov also did not admit his guilt: he claimed that he had observed precautionary measures.
However, the investigation found that the disinfector still violated the instructions. In particular, he demanded that the employees of Magnit leave the trading floor without explaining to them clearly how the premises would be processed. As a result, the watermelons turned out to be “defenseless” before a chemical attack – they lay in the hall without packaging, and the poisonous mixture settled on some of them. Obviously, this is the watermelon that the family from the next house bought. The grandmother and granddaughter died, and the girl’s mother was seriously poisoned.
According to the press service of the Moscow prosecutor’s office, the state prosecutor of the Lublin inter-district prosecutor’s office asked to sentence Kotov to 6 years in a colony-settlement. The verdict will be announced in the coming days.
