The Court of Appeal of the Gymnastic Ethics Foundation (GEF) partially granted the appeal of the Russian gymnast Ivan Kulyak. His suspension will end on May 16, 2023. Previously, the athlete was suspended from participation in international competitions for entering the awards ceremony with the letter Z on the form.
“The decision made by the GEF Disciplinary Commission on May 17, 2022 is confirmed, with the exception of paragraph 3, which is amended as follows: Ivan Kulyak cannot be allowed to participate in any FIG-sanctioned events or competitions organized by affiliated member federations for one year from the date of the GEF decision, i.e. from May 17, 2022 to May 16, 2023,” reads the statement. In addition, the athlete must pay the costs of the appeal in the amount of 5,000 Swiss francs.
In March of this year, 20-year-old Russian gymnast Ivan Kulyak entered the World Cup awards ceremony in Doha with the letter Z on his uniform. The letter Z has become an unofficial symbol of support for the actions of the Russian army during a special operation in Ukraine. The federation called the athlete’s behavior “shocking” and initiated disciplinary proceedings. Gymnast banned participate in competitions until May 17, 2023, and if sanctions against Russian athletes are not lifted before this period, Ivan Kulyak’s disqualification should have lasted for another six months.
May 26 Executive Committee of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) introduced changes to the Code of Organization, according to which any political, racial and religious propaganda at the competitions is prohibited.
